Crossbowman deal reduced damage to targets at close range with minimal height difference; their damage increases against mid-range targets.

III. Combat Role

The Crossbowman is a Tier 2 Archer unit, following the same counter mechanics as Archers, and is therefore at a relative disadvantage when facing Swordsman, Spearman, or Cavalry. Archers in Order of Kings have special adaptability to different terrain——on maps with elevation changes (e.g., siege battles, attacking or defending on slopes), Archers can maintain high damage, while those at lower ground are at a disadvantage. The main advantage of Crossbowman lies in their improved efficiency against elevated targets. However, they are vulnerable in close combat and can be easily taken out by rapidly approaching Enemy Army. When deploying Crossbowman, it is crucial to ensure their protection. A common tactic is to use Spearman as cover to fend off enemy Cavalry charges, creating a stable environment for the Crossbowman to deal damage.

IV. Commander Recommendations

Hou Yi: Hou Yi has an "Exterme" Archer Affinity, providing additional Attribute Bonuses to Archer units. Both of Hou Yi's Skills are passive: the Command Skill increases Normal Crit Rate and deals Extra Normal Attack Damage to one Enemy Army adjacent to the attack target; the Strategist Skill boosts the Critical Rate of both Active Skills and Rage Skills for the Troops, with an even higher rate if the enemy target is on higher ground. These Skills significantly enhance the damage of Crossbowman. To further maximize Hou Yi's damage, it is recommended to equip Skills or Equipment that increase Critical Rate for the best crit effects.

Sun Shangxiang: Sun Shangxiang is also an outstanding Archer Commander, providing additional Attribute Bonuses to Archer units. Her Command Skill lets her gain a certain percentage of the enemy Commander's highest stats and causes the enemy troops to enter the Stat Decrease state, reducing their highest attribute for a period of time. Her Strategist Skill provides her troops with bonus damage and Critical Rate when not attacked and when there are no adjacent enemy units of the same height. These effects can greatly improve the Crossbowman's damage when led by Sun Shangxiang.
